Ability to create folders for layers

Loving Optuma, however in my humble opinion one of the simplest, yet biggest improvement opportunities is the ability to create folders to better categories and track layers.

Hi James,

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll never say yes to something if I do not think it will ever get done. Unfortunately, while I agree that it would be a really nice feature, it will be a lot of work as the whole foundation of our indicator management would need to change. There would need to be a massive groundswell of requests for it for me to put it on the schedule.

Hey Mate

How about:

 1. The ability to highlight, or make bold / Italic certain layers to help them stand out.
 2. The ability to mark layers for indentation (See attached)
 3. The ability to toggle a single button and hide all layers that are currently turned off from the structure panel. (see attached)

Hi James,

Again, brilliant ideas but I need to make sure there is enough demand for something like that as they are not a trivial 1-hour job. Roughly, I would estimate that this will cost us between $5k-$10k so I need to see that there is the demand for it. Then there is the cost that other projects need to get delayed.

There are so many things which I would love to do, but we have to make sure that we are adding what has the highest demand. If something can be done quickly, I’m more than happy to sneak it in. Unfortunately, layers is not a trivial area.

Upvote this idea. Folders or nesting of layers would be fantastic. Something like this would really help keep analysis on the chart tidy. @Matthew please add to product roadmap. This would be a huge improvement to Optuma from a usability perspective. My analysis is very organised like the screenshot of James above. Whilst organised, this way of structuring layers results in so many clicks and steps.

Related to this topic: please add an indicator to show the ‘selected layer’ when new tools are being added. I notice many others struggling with this also. Current workaround is to lock all other layers prior to adding tools. This is another usability thing that again is time consuming and takes away from being able to focus on the application of technical analysis.

Here! Here! & Here Again!

For:

 • Layers and Sub-Layers in the Structure Panel, and for
 • Groups and Sub-Groups in the Script Manager, along with
 • Expand-All/ Collapse-All for Head Layers and Groups.
Cheers

Trevor

Appreciate the feedback (anyone else who needs this, please chime in). I think I need to add a better way of voting for features.

Hi Mathew,

Fully agree with James post above about Folders, etc

For Layers in Optuma, I often get lost which Layer I’m on etc, then once I release I drag each item and put to the correct layer. I have since found locking all layers other than the one you want to use is great, but sometimes in the haste of backtesting, you miss to do this.

I cool feature would be anytime you start applying tools, or use the Training Mode and without making a Layer as the Main or current Layer, it would automatically generate a new Layer / Folder with current Date, or if that Date’s layer is present, items default to this layer.

The Layer should be formatted YYMMDD Name ie 210212 XYZ (Double clicking on the name would only allow you to change the NAME not the DATE), it would stay sorted by date order, descending or ascending, you can choose your preference. This would be a super efficient way, you can quickly jump back into an old chart and see what and when analysis you had done. Having it sorted in date order, helps to keep the flow. Fine if you only have one or two, but if you had 10+ layers can get messy. If there was a sub Layer / Folder, the date can be removed, so only the Main Layers / Folders were dated.

Incorporating something like this, with what James mentioned above about Folders, with Layers inside folders, etc, would be brilliant.

Yes Please!

Hi Mathew,

Looks like there’s a lot of support layers and sub-layers or folders.

However, I would not like to see the labelling of Layers/Sub-layers preconfigured or automatically created as suggested by Scott, unless that was a user definable option. Asa default it would be an annoyance for the way I create Layers and and wish to use Sub-layers.

Cheers

Trevor

Thanks for all the feedback.

We’ll get something into the next major release.

It will be folders with the ability to hide/show, lock/unlock and colapse at the folder level. Still working out the mechanics for creating new groups, but most likely a right-click Action on a layer to move it to an existing group or a new one.

Hi Mathew,

I just wanted to chime in regarding layers… Would it useful to have the ability to copy a layer or an individual tool, then paste it into a different chart layout? I sometimes make “Monthly” , “weekly”, etc. chart layouts and then sometimes wish to copy the tools over to different layouts for certain securities… Maybe I go about things in the wrong fashion and I maybe should look at creating specific layers (or perhaps now folders) in same layout for “monthly tools” , “weekly tools” to have ability to enable/disable as I switch around time frames, if needed… What do most users do when they utilize various analysis on monthly, weekly, daily, hourly… etc…

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

You can do individual layers now with export and import, but copy paste would be a lot better. We’ll look at that for layers and layer groups.

Hey Mathew, any updates available on how this development is going?

Next update has almost finished the internal testing. Hoping to be in Beta before the end of the month.

Very exciting.
