RSI - How Calculated

Hi Guys,

Optuma has the RSI tool, but is unclear from the tool’s description as to which moving average, ie simple, exponential or some other, is used to calculate the RSI.

Please clarify which the moving average calculation is applicable.

Cheers

Trevor

Once you place the RSI tool on your chart, you can edit the properties and set it how you like. The default for the RSI is a 14 period with a 30 “Buy” level and a 70 "Sell level. Just select the RSI line and then open the associated properties table:

Hi Terry,

Thanks for your response, but it does not answer my question.

RSI can be calculated by a number of methods for the Up and Down moves used in the RSI formula RSI = 100 - 100/(1 + Up/Down). There is Wilder’s original smoothed calculation using the exponential moving average. Culter proposed another alternate RSI using a simple moving average. (See Relative Strength Index)

My question is “What is the actual smoothing calculation method used for calculating the Optuma’s RSI tool?”

Cheers

Trevor

Hi,

We are using the Wilder calculation method for RSI.
